JavaScript Coded
This week we’re going full on front-end baybeeeee,
I’ve been working with a good buddy of mine who runs a real ramshackle (albeit massively successful) custom sticker business. He and I met when I was running my own screen print operation in Portland, OR and let me tell ya, there really is nothing like street art, adhesive-backed vandalism, and the meticulousness of recalibrating a printing press to forge a friendship.
We’ve spent the last few months developing assets, testing out architecture, and centralizing all the tangential tech we’ll need to upgrade his DIY “just DM me on Instagram or check out my BigCartel” operation. A full re-platforming is a massive undertaking, and exactly the sort of strategic work I love doing.
Well we’re finally at the order entry and processing, super heavy eComm part of the process and we wanted something seamless, fully integrated, and more intuitive than what default low/no-code CMS platforms offer in terms of product checkout. I had nothing but a list of print types, potential customization methods, variable and tiered pricing, and a vague Google Doc about how that should all be structured. After a few weeks of staring blankly at the page and muttering to myself “this is totally an if/else thing” I’ve finally cracked it (more or less).
We’ve got the base functionality down for a flawless custom order form that calculates pricing variables across order types and select customizers in real time. Built with JavaScript and styled with CSS, this little “hey look if you click this thing the number changes” may seem like a really humble achievement (it is, lol) but to me, it is a massive step in the direction of telling my dyslexia to kick rocks lol. Can’t wait to share what this looks like when it’s all wrapped and ready to push!
